In the past, women would save up the fats and oils left over from cooking until they had enough to make a batch of soap. They would then gather the ashes from the wood fires and soak the ashes in water for several days to produce lye, a caustic alkali.  When lye is mixed with water and fats or oils, it saponifies, or becomes soap.

Although we do not use wood fire ashes to make the lye, our soap is otherwise made exactly as it was in the past.

Handmade soap is not always as visually perfect as a bar you might buy in a store. There can be tiny holes from air bubbles, the color or added products may not be completely uniform, and oils can settle into corners or on the top of soap while curing. In commercial soaps, they have usually added chemicals to keep the color uniform, the soap hard, the additives dispersed evenly, and for many different reasons. In fact..are you even using soap..or is it detergent? There IS a difference. Real soap only requires 3 ingredients...Oil, Lye, Water. What's in YOUR soap???

Rather than involving animals or meat fats, Harless Run Soap Works chooses to use PURE oils to make our soap, exclusively Olive Oil and Coconut Oil. 

​

We also use PURE essential oils, or the highest grade available, while carefully ascertaining that no animals are used in the testing of the oils. 

 

We add several different products to our soaps including Oatmeal, Poppy seeds, Clove, Ginger, and freshly ground Coffee. Again, we make certain that no animals are used in the testing of any of our additives and that they are pure and unadulterated in every way.

Soap is made here almost daily, so if we run out of your favorite, please contact us to let us know and we will try to make it more often in order to keep it in stock. We will also be adding some scents from the past in the near future including Sandalwood, Musk, Patchouli, and a few other old time favorites.
